Internet of Things Conference ’08

The first Internet of Things Conference was held in Switzerland on March 26th – 28th. The “Internet of Things” is described by the conference organisers as:

…a number of technologies and research disciplines that enable the Internet to reach out into the real world of physical objects. Technologies like RFID, short-range wireless communications, real-time localization and sensor networks are now becoming increasingly common, bringing the Internet of Things into commercial use. They foreshadow an exciting future that closely interlinks the physical world and cyberspace – a development that is not only relevant to researchers, but to corporations and individuals alike.

The idea being that everyday objects can be connected to the Internet, which allows them to communicate with each other, and with on-line services.

[NOTE: This was originally intended to be one post, with some of the main & most interesting points from the keynote speeches also being discussed, however, it started getting far too long, so a second post relating to the keynotes will follow shortly.]

On the conference site they have published audio & video Podcasts of the keynote speeches:

  • Introduction / MIT Auto-ID Center (Christian Floerkemeier)
  • Appliance Defined Ubiquitous Network; Network Infrastructure for Real World Sensing (Haruhisa Ichikawa, NTT & Professor at Univ. Electro-Communications, Tokyo)
  • Scaling Innovation in a Fused Physical and Digital World (Hannu Kauppinen, Nokia Research Centre)
